Wild Ones (School Holidays) – Tuesday 4th Oct

Program details:

TimberNook Hunter Valley school holiday program SPRING 2022 Tuesday 4th Oct

Curriculum: Waltzing Matilda

Each morning, children will have the opportunity to awaken the senses amongst “Waltzing Matilda” themed loose parts and staged environments. This is an opportunity to explore, connect and get to know the space before coming together in the Big Barn for our welcome circle. The Big Barn will set the scene for our classic Australiana theme, Waltzing Matilda.

Each day of the Waltzing Matlida series will begin with an opportunity to explore TimberNook base camp and engage in free-flow play. The space will feature both small and large loose parts to inspire play, creativity and imagination. Careful staging of the environment will awaken all of the senses for our theme, Waltzing Matlida. Once all of our Wild Ones have checked in, we will come together in the Big Barn for our Morning Circle. This is the zone where the “creating” opportunities will take place. These opportunities are invitations to inspire childrens’ creativity and free-flow play. Any opportunity or invitation presented at TimberNook is always optional for the children. We encourage the children to lead their play and pursue their interests. Some of these opportunities will include:

-leatherwork (making bag tags)

-map drawing

-designing and making a tucker bag

-completing challenges and building shelters

-designing and making a cork hat

-making own billy and cooking over the campfire

Motor skills: children will build strength in their whole body as they haul loose parts to build shelters. Searching for clues as we hike and navigate steep and uneven terrain will strengthen their upper body and the core as well as promoting bilateral coordination. Children will work on motor control as they are creating maps and tucker bags. They will challenge their gross motor skills of balance and coordination as they run around in search of clues and other games of their choosing.

Sensory integration: Children will experience diverse tactile experiences as they manipulate rope, branches, tarps, planks and fabrics when creating structures. Campfire lighting and cooking, as well as our 30m water slide provide wonderful opportunities to awaken the senses.

Social skills: children practice listening to peers’ ideas, requesting materials and assistance from peers, regulating emotions, and sharing details about their creation with the group.

Cognitive skills: Completing challenges and creating structures is a creative, team-building activity. Children come up with their own ideas, collaborate with others, and then execute ideas as a group, which inspires higher-level creativity, advanced design and problem-solving skills. Children will solve clues, collaborate with others, and then execute ideas as a group.

Each day will usually involve the following:

-team building games

-nature hike

-campfire building / campfire cooking (weather dependant)

-water slide (weather dependant)

Children coming to multiple days can choose to be involved in something different to the previous day they attended, as there is a wide variety of choices.

  • Please remember to be sun safe, pack sun safe bathers (or even an old t shirt!) and an extra pair of clothes to get changed into. Sunscreen will need to be applied upon arrival, then will be reapplied at midday.

  • We are also holding a competition for the children to create a Timbernook song! Prizes to be won!
